Paul di Resta delivered a huge surprise in the opening practice session in Canada on Friday.
The session was characterized by continually changing track conditions. The morning Rain left the Gilles-Villeneuve Formula 1 Circuit wet enough for Pirelli’s intermediate tyres right up until the closing minutes.
Several drivers set the pace as the track evolved until right at the end. Force India driver was the quickest man after he switch to the medium slicks to post 1:21.020s on a great morning for Force India.
That move pushed Jenson Button, who earlier had lapped his improved McLaren in 1:21.511s on the same rubber. The Englishman’s response to the Scot was 1:21.108s, good enough for second but 0.088s adrift.
The top two drivers were followed by Lotus Romain Grosjean who lapped in 1:21.258s, while Fernando Alonso was fourth with 1:21.308s in front of Kimi Raikkonen with 1:21.608s.
